Shipmates,
On a sunny but windy day, members of the Portland Branch of the Royal Naval Association attended the D-Day Memorial Service at the US Memorial in Victoria Gardens. The service was conducted by the Most Reverend Angie McLachlan and led by Shipmate and Portland Town Mayor, Councillor Charlie Flack, with Shipmate Marie Flack in attendance.
Shipmate Ben Cartwright paraded the Branch Standard alongside four other standards, including the US flag. The ceremony featured the Naval hymn, prayers, and the sounding of the Last Post, where standards were dipped, followed by Reveille. Wreaths were laid in remembrance, and attendees sang both the National Anthem and the American Anthem. Following the service, guests were invited to gather for tea and biscuits at the Victoria Bowls Club House.
Chairman Dusty later posted: “Thank you to all those that attended the D-Day Memorial Service in Victoria Gardens. A nice service and well attended.”
