Shipmates
On Thursday, 8th May 2025, under a bright cloudless sky, the Branch presented a strong presence for the VE80 Service held at the Cenotaph on Portland at 1600. The event was a poignant moment of remembrance and reflection, honouring the sacrifices made during Victory in Europe Day, 80 years on.
Nearly 20 Shipmates assembled in unity for the Service, which was led by Rev Tim Gomm. The occasion was further enhanced by the musical contributions of the St George’s School Singing Group, whose heartfelt performances filled the air with a spirit of youthfulness, commemoration and respect.
At the heart of the ceremony, Chairman Shipmate Dusty stepped forward to lay a wreath on behalf of the Branch, ensuring the memory of those who served was honoured with respect.
As the Last Post and Reveille echoed through the air, an unplanned tribute unfolded—the distant roar of helicopter engines punctuated the moment, adding a poignant moment to the afternoon.
Following the conclusion of the service, an important event took place—the formal signing of the Armed Forces Covenant, a commitment to support those who serve and have served in the military.
This solemn act was safeguarded by Shipmates Ben and Micky, who stood proudly as Standard Bearers, representing the Branch and HMS Ajax Association with dignity and pride.
With the official proceedings at the Cenotaph completed, many Shipmates retired to The George, where Lanterns were swung over well-earned post-service refreshments.
Reflecting on the day, Chairman Dusty later expressed his gratitude: “Many thanks to all those that managed to attend the Cenotaph. It was a great service and the children’s choir just made it better. Thanks to S/M Ben for doing the Branch proud and S/M Micky Fox for doing HMS Ajax Association proud with their standard.”
